Research Scholars Programme

The Research Scholars Programme is aimed at research-interested individuals who may or may not have NIHR clinical research experience already. We are encouraging applications from the whole cross section of clinical staffing roles including doctors, nurse’s pharmacists, radiographers, occupational therapists, physiologists, physiotherapists, radiotherapists and biomedical scientists. The Programme is an interactive developmental programme aimed at equipping tomorrow's clinical research leaders with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become the Principal and Chief Investigators of the future.

Successful candidates receive funding (half funded by the CRN NWC award and the other half 'match' funded by the applicants employer) to cover one full day per week as dedicated time for research. Scholars commit to attending a day per month at the CRN NWC offices in Liverpool for an exciting programme of face-to-face sessions.

The Research Scholars Programme offers the following benefits:

· A development pathway towards becoming a Principal or Chief investigator

· Full support from CRN NWC & your employer

· Support & guidance from being matched with a mentor who is an experienced Principal or Chief Investigator

Am I eligible to apply?

The Research Scholars Programme is an initiative to develop early career researchers. In order to be eligible for the Programme you should be:

· New Consultants or General Practitioners within the last 5 years of taking up their post

· Nurses (usually Band 7 or above)

· Allied Health Professionals (usually Band 7 or above)

Good Clinical Practice

Good Clinical Practice - Introduction Course

This full-day workshop is designed to provide an introduction to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), the EU Directives, UK Regulations and Research Governance Framework requirements covering clinical trials and other NIHR Portfolio studies conducted within secondary care (primarily hospital based) settings.

Good Clinical Practice - Refresher Course

This three hour course is for experienced research delivery staff who:

have previously completed either taught or on-line GCP training
have recent practical experience of working in a clinical research environment
and have a good understanding of the principles and quality standards of GCP and related frameworks.

Clinical Research Roadshows

CRN North West Coast Roadshows are an excellent way for colleagues across the region to come together to share best practice, learn from each others' experiences and open up opportunities to collaborate. The CRN North West Coast presents packed schedules of talks and workshops sharing the challenges and celebrating the achievements of those working in clinical research in our area.

Early Career Researcher Development Pathway Programme

NIHR CRN North West Coast is currently running the early career research programme that invites nurses, midwives and allied health professions with an interest in research to join this innovative and unique 12-month programme.

The course is designed to recruit enthusiastic and committed health care professionals, educated to degree level who are employed by CRN NWC partner organisations within the North West Coast footprint and who can demonstrate a significant interest and commitment to health and social care research.

You will need full support from your employing organisation and agreement to two study days per month over 12 months.

This course aims:

To understand the drivers, policy context and value of research in the NHS and across the NWC region
To ensure the development of the knowledge, intellectual abilities and methodologies to do and lead research
To understand how to engage and influence others to ensure the wider impact of research
To understand the factors/dimensions that create and enable leadership in research
Develop personal qualities and approach to be an effective researcher
Have knowledge of the standards, requirements and professionalism to do research
To identify and fulfil personal development needs/learning outcomes
To create a personal network that will progress and promote the research leadership journey
To engage with current Principal and Chief Investigators in the NWC region and understand their role and its impact
To develop reflective practice skills
To develop aspirational goals and an initial 3-year career plan to achieve leadership potential
